It’s that time of the year again when the town is painted red with ornate lanterns, tangy oranges, and tacky red packets. Catching up.. or being caught in awkward situations? Catching up with your relatives means a truck load of domestic queries to attend to, and sometimes it may just proof to be a big headache. After a quick survey among our Qolleagues, we’ve managed to compile a list of questions you are likely to face, and how you can siam them. Here goes:
#1 “When are you getting married?”
This question tops the list for almost any CNY gathering. If this is a touchy topic for you, our Qolleagues recommend you to turn the steering wheel, gently and cautiously. Direct the attention to something light hearted and joyous, maybe throw in a little praise too. Here’s what Jesper (who is CURRENTLY SINGLE) usually says to change the topic, “I’m saving the best (obviously yourself) for the last. Anyway, your homemade love letters are delicious! Maybe I should marry them, I will never get sick of them!” There you go.
#2 “When are you having kids?”
Even if you are married, do not, for a second, think that you have successfully escaped. “Until you have a family of 4, this question will haunt you everywhere you go,” says Claire from Human Resource, who has a daughter aged 3. She advises us to take the smart way out! Be patient and let your relatives know that this is in the pipeline planning. However, for now, you would like to focus on providing a stable income and a finance safety net before committing to a second or third family member. This shows that you did give it a serious thought and is mature enough to plan ahead before making any reckless decisions.
#3 What are you doing? When are you getting a job?
This one goes out to all the fresh graduates, to the long-time workers who just want a short break, and finally, to all of you who are taking time out to figure life. All of us have been through this stage some time in our lives. We understand. Let’s see what our part-timer, Hwee Ling from Operations has to say about being a fresh graduate. Tell your relatives freelancing is in trend and on the rise (conveniently take Uber for an example, if you are lucky enough, you might successfully divert the topic) and how you are taking odd jobs now to take a slower pace in life while looking for the perfect job. After all, good things come to those who wait.
#4 Why are you wearing black/dull colours?
Millennials are extremely fashion conscious if loud colors do not exactly define their style (plus we know you need that cool outfit for your #ootd shots). Fret not, you can still be the fashionista you are, Clara from Marketing, our office fashionista, advises you to just grab a shawl along. When you finally arrive at your destination, wrap yourself with the red and loud shawl and you are good to go.
